Hi. I know that it's over a year since Kevin Jacques asked the question about the skiing trip(s) to Austria in the early 70's and I expect that he has probably found out the answer by now, but as I recall the resort we went to was called Reith (im Alpbachtal).

I have been enjoying listening to Arthur Smith reading from his autobiog on BBC radio 4 this week (10 may) Anyone else listening? His excerpts did not include his memories of Roan.

Greetings- There may be some oldsters who remember "Gollywog" during 1944 to 1949, and I'm still alive and kicking. 25 years in the motor trade, then 20 years with British Rail keeping the signals displaying the correct colour. Many thanks, John Roan, for what you taught me, though I admit not appreciating it at the time. At least, the flying bombs and rockets that used to prevent me from attending to my homework in Greenwich Park at lunchtime seem to have stopped.... Best wishes to all staff and pupils from
Peter in Swanley, Kent.

I was at Devonshire Drive between 1959-1964. Loved walking to Founder's Day to see what the talent was like from the boys' school. Still remember the girls' school phone number - Tideway 1066. Proud to have been a Roan Girl and am today watching the splendour that is Greenwich Park on BBC covering the 2009 London Marathon. Hello to anybody who remembers me.

Can anyone enlighten me on the origin of the name Roan? My Father was Roan George Saunders a vicar of Cricklewood and then St Alphage in Edmonton during and just after the war.By chance I was driving past Old Roan near Aintree in Liverpool recently and it is the first time I've seen it with that spelling. I hope you don't mind me cluttering up your web page. Mike Roan Saunders

Roan and Greenwich will forever remain a part of my soul! I can say after 30 years, that being a Roan Girl has contributed a great deal to the enrichment of my life, having lived outside of the UK for the majority of those years!
Time and time again the mere whisper of a memory inflamed by some little spark around me, brings me back to our Christian assembly morning after morning; Founder's Day Services at St. Alf's; competent teachers of sound character; hockey in winter, lest I become too soft - constantly reminding me that being a good sport was far superior to winning! When it came to "A" levels - studying in the Sixth Form Garden during the Spring was somewhat ethereal - lest I become insentitive - are mere whisps of the tapestry woven at Roan Girls' School.
"Hello People" will have special significance to those graduates of 1978. So Hello Y'all from Florida, USA, where I now reside. Viva Greenwich! Viva Roan!

Hi Old Roans of the 50 - 65 years old vintage. I am arranging the XIXth Old Roan '54 - 61 Christmas Dinner and as usual intend to invite a special guest. The venue as always is Cafe Rouge Greenwich. I am suggesting Wednesday 17 December 12.00 for 13.00h. As usual the time will pass too rapidly (a bit like the years...!) so be prepared to move on afterwards to continue discussions in a local hostelry. Please contact me on the above e-mail when you can confirm you are coming. If you don't know, the drinks and food costs are simply shared equally and it costs about 25GBP each. Names to conjure with: Reg Hodge, Dave Horsborough, Graham Johnson, Rick Bruce, Salkeld, Hester, Buckle, etc. Go on; give it a go...how much longer have you got? Why so early? Well, to allow you to clear your diary and to permit me to book the numbers next time i am in UK. Floreat Roana

Hello! I was at the school from 1971 to '78 ( I think!). Dr Taylor and Alfie Knott at the helm. Interested to read about the progress of the footie teams. I was a sub ( disgraceful decision ) in the 1977 ( or was it 1978?! ) English schools cup final played at Stoke City's old ground, which we won of course 4-1, and played in the schools district cup and London cup finals which we also won. We had quite a good year! By the way I lost all my programmes, pictures, paper cuttings and medals from those games so if anyone can help!!

My older brothers, Colin, Alan, Nick and Dave, all went to the school as well some you may know them and if you would like to get in touch, send me a mail. I'd love to get to the club and see some old pals but working abroad at the moment so may be difficult, but one day!

Reading below about school trips to Austria skiing!! No-one told me about that. Especially my parents!! The furthest I got was Braithewaite where I got pleurisy and sent half the time in hospital. Happy days!

Honore et Labore. Here's to old John Roan who lived and worked and died.............

I was at the school from 1968 to 1975. I'm still in touch with several old friends from that time even though I now live in Southampton. I work for the Rt Hon John Denham MP and I recently obtained a BSc from the Open University - currently working to upgrade this to a BSc (Hons) Psychology later this year. I'm married (for the second time) and have a twelve year old son who is very nearly taller than me (anybody who remembers me will know this is not difficult).

If Trevor Talbot reads this he'll be pleased to know that I'm still trying to act. I'm a member of Southanpton Operatic Society and my most recent roles were Pirelli in Sweeney Todd and Cord Elam in Oklahoma. Terry Hall (former physics teacher) was also apparently a member of this society before he came to teach at Roan.

If anybody wants to get in touch, my email is [email protected] .

Hi Dave, Apparently the 1st team took a rather severe beating (6-1 I believe!) but the 2nd XI WON the B Cup.
Congratulations to all that took part.................
